Yoga Health Benefits

Lately I've been wanting to try something new in fitness besides cardio and I think I'm going to start yoga. I want to have more flexibility, more strength, feel less stiff, and be more relaxed. As I was talking to my friend about yoga she said it has made her more stronger, less stiff, more relaxed, and she can now do a hand stand. If yoga can help me do this I no I will be more healthy physically and mentally.

Health Benefits of Yoga
Article from www.webmd.com

Yoga for flexibility:
Yoga poses work by stretching your muscles. They can help you move better and feel less stiff or tired.
At any level of yoga, you'll probably start to notice benefits soon. In one study, people improved their flexibility by up to 35% after only 8 weeks of yoga.

Yoga for Strength:
Some styles of yoga, such as ashtanga and power yoga, are very physical. Practicing one of these styles will help you improve muscle tone.
But even less vigorous styles of yoga, such as Iyengar or hatha, can provide strength and endurance benefits.
Many of the poses, such as downward dog, upward dog, and the plank pose, build upper-body strength. The standing poses, especially if you hold them for several long breaths, build strength in your hamstrings, quadriceps, and abs. Poses that strengthen the lower back include upward dog and the chair pose.

When done right, nearly all poses build core strength in the deep abdominal muscles.

Yoga for Posture:
When you're stronger and more flexible, your posture improves.
Most standing and sitting poses develop core strength, since you need your core muscles to support and maintain each pose.
With a stronger core, you're more likely to sit and stand "tall."
Yoga also helps your body awareness. That helps you notice more quickly if you're slouching or slumping, so you can adjust your posture.

Yoga for breathing:
Yoga usually involves paying attention to your breath, which can help you relax. It may also call for specific breathing techniques.
But yoga typically isn't aerobic, like running or cycling, unless it's an intense type of yoga or you're doing it in a heated room.

Yoga for Less Stress:
You may feel less stressed and more relaxed after doing some yoga.
Some yoga styles use meditation techniques that help calm the mind. Focusing on your breathing during yoga can do that, too.

Yoga for The Heart
Yoga has long been known to lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate. A slower heart rate can benefit people with high blood pressure or heart disease, and people who've had a stroke.
Yoga has also been linked to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and better immune system function.

Beauty of A Good Heart

The reason why I am sharing this is because I want us all to live originally, to know we are beautiful because of WHO we are, and to not dwell on the so called "perfect body."

As women we can be critical on ourselves when it comes to body image. One thing I've been working hard on this year is having a more positive view on myself. It hasn't always been easy but, I know I've came a long way to where I use to be. I'm striving to be that women my future daughter or child to look up to. I want her to to know she's beautiful know matter what she looks like. I want her to know how special she is and what great qualities she has to share with the world. I want her to know just like I wouldn't neglect to nourish my garden I wouldn't neglect to nourish myself- through body and thoughts. I want her to know she's a beautiful daughter of God!

My own amazing mother gave me this quote this year. When I'm having a bad day and need a little extra reminder I look at this quote. I couldn't say it better myself. You can find this quote on Pinterest.

This quote comes from the inspiring Stephanie Nielson. She was burned in a tragic airplane crash and is a survivor. She is known for her positive approach to life. Please watch and read her inspiring story. She is truly an inspiring and beautiful women!

Overall Wellness

Growing up my dad told me to try to be a well rounded person by doing four things. They are being physical, mental, social/emotional, and spiritually balanced in life.  I find that when I am doing something everyday in these areas in my life I am more happier, confident, I feel accomplished, and I feel I am giving to the world. Striving to be "overall healthy" instead of being "skinny" is the best for everyone. We are all given one body and that body is your own uniqueness. Instead of puting it down, embrace it!

My Favorite Pedometer App

For my workouts I like to walk/run. I use this great pedometer app called "footsteps" on my iPod. It's a winner! Why do I like this pedometer app?

Footsteps Pedometer
(from the web)

My Favorite Pedometer App

First...It's accurate!
I've tried a couple of pedometer apps and some of them are not accurate. This one is. I gave this app a test for some proof. One day I did an exercise video that said how many calories are expected to burn and that is how many calories it said on the "footsteps app".

Second...It's all included!
Some pedometers only count steps or calories. This app included steps, calories, miles, time, a pacer, average speed, workout history, and it can detect if you are running or walking. Oh, and one more thing...

Third...It has a custom workout playlist!
On your "footsteps app" go to music and add your selected iPod songs to customize a workout playlist. Best of all...it's unlimited.

Fourth...It's cheap!
A good pedometer is at least $15. This pedometer is free (that is if your max. workout is 6,000 steps) or $1.99 (if you plan to workout over 6,000 steps). Even if you don't get the free app it still is a deal.

Notes: This app only works with ipod devices
